About the Author
Dr. Barry R. Cournoyer has been a social work practitioner for more than 40 years and a university teacher for more than 35 years. He received his M.S.S.W. degree from the University of Tennessee and the D.S.W. degree from the University of Utah. He is Emeritus Professor with the Indiana University School of Social Work, where he taught for 32 years. A former Associate Dean with the School, he remains interested in student learning assessment and quality improvement activities in social work education. In addition to this eighth edition of THE SOCIAL WORK SKILLS WORKBOOK, he co-authored THE SOCIAL WORK PORTFOLIO and the Seventh Edition of SOCIAL WORK PROCESSES -- all published by Brooks/Cole-Cengage. He also authored THE EVIDENCE-BASED SOCIAL WORK SKILLS BOOK, published by Allyn & Bacon.

Successor to Secrets of Opening Surprises Series

Lowinger's "Opening Originals" fills a gap left since the "Secrets of Opening Surprises" series has not seen a new entry since 2012. Fifteen opening sidelines, ranging from somewhat to extremely offbeat, are presented with an average of 7 annotated games each. Furthermore those games range from historical, such as very first game of the very first chapter, which features the inventor of a variation playing against one of the greatest past chess theoreticians, to games played within the last decade or less.

If you google for "lowinger opening originals excerpt pdf" the first result will contain the table of contents. You will find it heavily slanted toward 1.e4, which is the first move of ten of the fifteen opening variations. If this does not work for you, you might be further put off by more typos than should have made it to print, for instance in introductory remarks to the chapter on "1.e4 d5 2.ed Qxd5 3.Nf3!?", not once, but twice, 2.Nf3 is referred to. So the book could have used better editing, but unlike the Secrets of Opening Surprises series, it's entirely the work of one author, rather than one author per chapter -- that had to have made it harder to assemble.

As a 1.e4 player I definitely foresee using 3 or 4 of these lines in the near future, and am quite pleased with this book.

To see how a good opening book should be done

I found this book every bit as disappointing as his earlier one on the Center Counter. To see how a good opening book should be done, compare it to the marvelous one by GM Smerdon on the Scandinavian (2...Nf6 line) -- which I can highly recommend for its thoroughness, originality, and practicality. Alas, in Lowinger's poor effort there are no theory sections. The format is the lazy man's one of throwing in a bunch of annotated games, with the inevitable result that the coverage is incomplete, and a lot of space wasted. Still I applaud the author for his interest and passion for offbeat stuff, but can't in good faith recommend this book for active tournament players since the coverage of recommended lines is so cursory.

Interesting & effective lines that should challenge "booked-up" opponents....Annotated games, ranging from the author's to world class players, illustrate important themes for the non-master. I have already notched several wins thanks to this book. Lowinger's explanations are thorough & engaging, especially concerning transition to the middle game. The author obviously has a considerable amount of teaching experience.

THE way to transform your entire life!

Dai Manuel has put together a literally-life-changing book (and approach to life, really). He guides you through a process that creates an inspired, driven, healthy person (in the broadest sense, not just in terms of fitness). He's lived the transformation himself, so he really understands what it takes. That makes such a difference - this isn't some guy who always was super fit who benefitted from magic metabolism and perfect genes. He's a real person who has overcome obesity, depression and his own health issues to lead this really inspiring life dedicated to helping others.

I can't recommend this book enough, and have actually given it as a gift to several people.

The REAL DEAL

Self-improvement is a personal, ongoing project.

Dai breaks it down into three pretty easy steps. Easy is the understanding. Doing is the challenging part!

His formula is you need to give yourself 30 minutes a day. That’s all. I kinda see this as steeped in a crossfit mindset.

30 minutes
15 minute WOD (workout of the day)
10 minutes of personal development
5 minutes of meditation.

Sound easy? It is… and it isn’t.

The WODS make you work really hard, and get really sore. But it’s really worth it!

Personal development - feed your brain. Read, journal, something that challenges you.

Mediation - five minutes of mindfulness. I am so sucking on that part right now!

There’s a lot of things in our life that we give time to. Things that are basically junk food for the mind. Television, video games, using substances that aren’t that good for us. we all have “time vampires” in our life that we use to distract us from true thought and development.

The book is a short read but really drills down to the core of what makes us happy. What, if we focus on, will pay back considerable dividends.

And you don’t have to do it alone! Dai’s got a whole tribe of folks that are in the same struggle as you. There is no judgment, only moving forward! He will emails you a workout and a motivational video during his phases. Google and see when the next one is starting!

The book is the real deal, with nutrition guidance, explanation of exercises with pictures, and handy sheets you can track your progress on. My plan is to keep incorporating these things in my life as I work to be healthier, happier, and more balanced.

Good, but not the best for the non-professional.

The `Baker Exegetical Commentary On The New Testament' for `Acts' or `Acts of the Apostles' by Darrell L. Bock, the research professor of New Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary is a generally good commentary on one of the less well appreciated books of the New Testament. In the spectrum of commentaries which range from very pastoral - friendly such as the `New Interpreters' Bible' to the heavily scholarly volumes which are practically worthless for pastoral use, such as those in the `Word Biblical Commentary' series, Bock's volume falls about two - thirds of the way toward the scholarly side. The book's greatest strength, as well as its greatest weakness, is that it seeks to be a scholarly study of all the latest commentaries on `Acts', most especially the Anchor Bible contribution from Joseph Fitzmyer, the Sacra Pagina contribution from Luke Timothy Johnson, The New International Commentary on the New Testament volume by F. F. Bruce, and `The Acts of the Apostles, A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary' by Ben Witherington. In fact, Bock refers so often to Fitzmyer and Witherington that I seriously wonder what I'm doing reading Bock, when I can be getting the goods from the horse's mouth. Surveys of the best (and worst) of scholarly opinions are great, but such books become books about the research rather than books about the scripture. As I read Bock, I often find myself vainly seeking to find what Bock himself thinks about a passage. And, there are times when I find Bock expressing an original opinion, only to find other experts disagreeing with him, and I agree with the other writers.
One of the better reasons for picking Bock is that he also did a commentary on the Gospel of Luke, the first of the Luke - Acts combination, written by the same author. I have not used Bock's commentary on Luke, because those by Fitzmyer, Johnson, and Joel Green are so good, and, Fitzmyer and Johnson have also done commentaries on both works.
A `simple' reason for picking Bock is that his book is quite new, so it covers all the major works written in the last fifteen years. Another simple reason for picking Bock is that in addition to pointing out the good stuff, he gives us what we need to know to avoid the bad commentaries. But, both of these reasons are a bit weak. If you happen to read this review and go with Fitzmyer, Johnson, Witherington, or Bruce, you really don't need Bock at all.
Since I always find it best to work with at least two commentaries on scripture for my lay Bible study teaching, I strongly recommend Robert W. Wall's commentary in volume X of the New Interpreter's Bible plus either Fitzmyer or Witherington. If Johnson has a point, Fitzmyer will have it in spades. Wall is especially good for lay study, and Fitzmyer is a good partner, as Fitzmyer (or the 'Word Biblical Commentary' volume) will have all the study critical material Wall avoids.
Last but not least, I found the Baker style of presentation just a bit difficult to follow; however, I must commend them on excellent typefaces for their readability. Otherwise, this is a book almost exclusively for scholars and teachers of courses on `Acts'.

Best Commentary Available on Acts

I have used a number of commentaries on Acts over the years. Previously my favorites were Haenchen and Fitzmyer. Both had the most exegetical material available until the recent publication of Bock's wonderful commentary. Bock is thoroughly Evangelical and this will be helpful for those who previously had so few options for a good Evangelical commentary on Acts. Bock also does an excellent job of summarizing the findings of previous works. He is highly readable and has much to offer both laity and pastors. I am currently preaching through the book of Acts, and even though I was on chapter 9 when Bock's commentary was finally available, it has quickly become the first commentary I turn to each week!

The WORST Statistics book ever written.

I have a PhD. in Social Work, and can positively say this book was no help to anyone in my class. The words couldn't be muddier and the paragraphs clunkier. It has the feel of a paper revised so much that it's lost any meaning, as though the author sat with an open thesaurus and exchanged what might have been a fine word for some other word, at every third word. It reads like an eighth grader found a thesaurus and strung sentences together hoping to gain some recognition, or hastily jotted lecture notes at the moment, or a vaguely intelligible and dull alien script.

It is a shame that bright students might be introduced to the subject by this book, and they, if weren't bright, would think they couldn't understand the subject, when in fact the blame falls on the shoulders of the authors. If the authors had decided to write such a book, why make it such a tangled mess?

As you read the text, an important term, such as "Operationalization," changes its meaning according to the authors' whims, so the student is left nonplussed as to what the word means. When the students looks in the glossary, he finds "Conceptualization," which, like "Operationalization," is given several paragraphs to define; however, one, and not the other, can be found in the glossary.

The authors wrote, "Specifying...is the process called Operationalization." Then, later, wrote, "...specifying how we will operationalize..." which of course translates to specifying.

My students resigned themselves to looking up the terms on Wikipedia for a clearer explanation.

120$ for this??? really?

I am not a social worker. I am a researcher in the sciences. However, my partner is doing her bachelor's degree in social work. When she said she is taking a course on stats, i was eager to get involved and help her out. When she ordered this book, she complained about the price,a hefty 120$ (with the amazon discount it amounts to 90$ i believe). I mentioned to her that this is a fair price for textbooks in sciences as well. When the book arrived, i was completely shocked. Although i have not read the book, I can make a few observations:

1) the content of the book are some basic ideas of statistics. I have seen stats books used by people in the departments of math, physics and engineering. This was however a MUCH smaller book than any introductory book on stats that I have ever seen , but probably one of the most expensive ones! I am not complaining about lack of thoroughness in the content, obviously a social worker needs a lot less stats than an engineer, but why the high price?? you can get the content of this book online very easily. Even if the book is extremely well written (which it is not, according to many other reviewers) is this a reasonable price tag for a book that summarizes a few introductory ideas in statistics? Looks like the author is cashing in on a very minimal effort in compiling a set of very basic ideas that could be found anywhere.

2) 8th edition??? really?? are basic ideas in fundamental statistics changing this rapidly that the author felt the need to put out EIGHT editions in a few years? This is just utterly ridiculous and looks like the author is just riding the gravy train on this one.

As someone with a PhD in the sciences, I have had to teach courses a few times during my final years of grad school. I made sure the students' money was not wasted. I did that by researching the books that are used by others and assessing their quality. If i felt that there were no good books, I would ask the students to solely rely on my own notes. And if there were good books, i made sure students dont rush to buy the latest edition for a premium price when an older edition was sufficient and the differences were merely superficial. I think an instructor who asks his students to buy this book, is doing a disservice to the profession and I would seriously question their competence and/or their integrity.

To anyone teaching this course: USE YOUR OWN NOTES, you are not teaching a graduate level course in the math department. This is a very unfair price for a book of such small depth. Or use any other generic intro to stats.
To the author: I cant wait for the 125th edition. I wonder what great discoveries you have made in the field of "hypothesis testing" or how you have managed to create a better version of the normal distribution.

Super for Elliott wave

As with all Jeff Kennedy's writings, this is excellent. Make no mistake, you have to have an excellent grasp of Elliott Wave to take in the work in this book; this is not for beginners. If one has had a few months experience with Elliott Wave, then this is a book to buy. I have both the Kindle and the hard copy. Get the hard copy. Its much easier to relate the graphs to the text in the book compared with the Kindle version.

Most practical book ever written on elliott wave

I had long standing questions about how analysts of elliott wave international( Jeffery Kennedy and wayne gorman in this case) do there step by step deduction on arriving to a comfortable count and this book just answers that.

Easy to read as less text and more charts with counts. Takes you step by step to arrive at count.

Especially clarifies( live trading examples) on some key text given in Elliott wave principle such as " Ending diagonal in Wave C" how to recognize it and trade it and also I liked the example given on how to trade a triangle? This is very unique and never seen before.

I have been in and out subscriber of their monthly newsletter and I always has this question" How did this guy arrived to this count" as this is shortcoming of their monthly newsletter, they just give the count and don't explain it. This book answers and clarifies logic and reasoning behind arriving at various kinds of count.

A very useful and practical guide to Elliott Wave Trading

While Prechter's book may be the bible for Analysts interested in Wave patterns, Gorman's book addresses the much needed practical guidebook for Traders.
I bought the Kindle edition because the printed book was out of stock soon after release. After having read through the book, I now feel having the printed book and being able to mark it up and make notes on the charts would be far more beneficial than the electronic format.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly to EW traders .
