The Weapon Shops of Isher, by A. E. Van Vogt

4784 years after its founding, the Empire of Isher ruled the Solar System, and an impetuous and willful girl ruled the Empire. Into this scientific wonderland, a time-shaking bombshell was tossed, in the form of a man from 1951, victim of a conflict which was older than the Empire and which now threatened the end of both Isher and its worlds.

Here we meet such characters as Cayle Clark, who could never lose at cards; Robert Hedrock, who knew everyone's secrts; and Peter Cadron, who openly sold illegal super-weapons in public. And the Empress Innelda Isher, who could never undrestand the word "No."

"The Right to Buy Weapons is the Right to be Free"
By Patrick Shepherd
Sounds like a blurb from the NRA, but in fact this slogan is one of the lynch-pins of one of the most complicated and headlong adventures that van Vogt (often called the master of the re-complicated story) ever wrote.

The Weapon Shops, like many of his stories, was actually written and published as several stories before being collected and somewhat edited into book form. In this case, the major portions were published as "The Seesaw" (Astounding, July 1941), "The Weapon Shop" (Astounding, Dec 1942), and "The Weapon Shops of Isher (Thrilling Wonder Stories, Feb. 1949). It is important to note the age of these stories, written as they were during the so-called `Golden Age' of science fiction, when ideas were far more important than character or great prose style. This book is absolutely replete with ideas, but the prose, dialogue, and character development certainly leave something to be desired when compared to modern novels. While reading this book you need to let the story line and ideas overwhelm you, and ignore some of the more blatant excesses in writing style.

It starts with a Weapon Shop magically appearing in a 1950 neighborhood. When a policeman attempts to open its door, he finds it locked - but when a newspaperman tries it just a minute later, it opens - and the newspaperman finds himself in the Isher Empire, which has been around for 4700 years, and where the Weapon Shops effectively form the `opposition' to this government. This is plot thread number one. The second thread is that of a young man wishing to leave his provincial village and make his fortune in the big city - where he finds that he is a `callidetic giant', able to beat any game of chance, and ends up amassing a fortune so large that he can upset the economic stability of the Empire. Thread three involves the world's only immortal, Robert Hedrock, who was instrumental in establishing both the Empire and the Weapon Shops, the first to provide a stable form of government, the second to ensure that the Empire can neither stagnate nor become an unopposed dictatorship. Stir in invisibility, time travel, and the secret of faster-than-light propulsion and you have an explosive mix that will keep you turning pages as fast as you can (and don't you dare think about the plausibility of any of this!).

I think I first read this book around 1960, when I was about twelve, and many of the images of this book made a large impression on me: the casinos and their very futuristic gambling machines, the giant computer that kept track of all the vital statistics of every person in the solar system, the idea of waging war by shifting in time, the `brothels' of the day, even the `energy weapons' that the Weapon Shops sold. Reading it today, these same items still fascinate - and the ending is still an explosive bang.

The thematic point of the right to have weapons strong enough to protect the individual from any government excesses is a major one, and certainly was very topical when it was written at the height of WWII. However, this point is not examined very closely for its downside, because in the story such weapons could `sense' whether or not the person purchasing it had the appropriate mental outlook - an easy way out of the problems seen by today's society with too many weapons freely available to almost anyone.

This is possibly his strongest novel, certainly at least as good as his Slan and The World of Null-A, as here all the various ideas and plot threads do seem to come together in a cohesive whole, something that could not be said about a lot of his works. And it is a pell-mell, head-over-heels, fun and fascinating read.

Guns and Empire
By Paul Camp
There are some critics like Colin Wilson who view A.E. van Vogt as a profound philosophical science fiction writer. I suspect that rather more critics side with Damon Knight, who finds van Vogt to be a writer of almost no literary value at all. My own view is a bit more mixed. I find that many of van Vogt's novels (_The Beast_, _Rogue Ship_, _Darkness at Diamonda_) are awesomely bad. A few others (_The War Against the Rull_, _The Silkie_) are passable space operas. And then there are those that are part fairy tale, part mad inspiration, part dream sequence, and part pseudoscientific doubletalk that actually deserve their reputation: _Slan_ (1946), _The Book of Ptath_ (1947), _The World of Null A_ (1948), and _The Voyage of the Space Beagle_ (1950). For all their faults, these novels have a pizzazz and energy that transcend literary polish.

_The Weapon Shops of Isher_ (1951) belongs in this third category of van Vogt's novels. It is one of his most skillful fixup novels, based on novelettes from _Astounding_ and _Thrilling Wonder_ in the 1940s.

We are presented with a lot of the gee-whiz trappings that we come to expect of van Vogt at his best. There is an Empire ruled by a beautiful, but willful and ruthless Empress. In loyal opposition, there are the powerful Weapon Shops that bear the libertarian motto:

FINE WEAPONS
THE RIGHT TO BUY WEAPONS IS THE
RIGHT TO BE FREE (21)

There is the obligatory van Vogt superman, Robert Hedrock, who (it develops) has something to do with both the Empire and the Shops, and who has an agenda of his own. And there is McAllister, the hapless newsman, who has become a kind of human pendulum swinging through space-time:

The newsman was now the juggernaut of all juggernauts. In all the universe there had never been anything like the power that was accumulating, swing by swing, in his body. Released, the explosion would rock the fabric of space. All time would sigh to its echoes and the energy tensions that created the illusion of matter might collapse before the strain. (78)

But perhaps the real secret of the success of the novel is that much of the action is told from the point of view of three "little people": Fara, a pompous small-town shopkeeper; Cayle, his rebellious but naive son; and Lucy, a brave but impulsive agent for the Weapon Shops. Part of the fun of the novel is watching Fara learn the way of the Weapon Shops, Cayle learn the ways of the City and Mars, and Lucy fend for herself when the Shops cast her adrift. We see these characters grow and change, and their interactions with one another mature.

There are sections of mad invention:

Swiftly he held one of the rings on his finger against an ordinary looking electric socket. A loop of metal slid out. He inserted his finger into the loop and pulled. What happened in that moment was an ordinary enough weapon shop phenomenon. He was transmitted by a weapon shop matter transmitter a distance of about eleven hundred miles into one of his numerous laboratories...
He decided that he could safely remain an hour. (83-84)

And there are other sections that seem dreamlike:

Twice, involuntarily, she slowed. The first time, something soft seemed to caress her face. It was almost as if a loving hand reached out and deliberately touched her, with affectionate fingers. The second time, the result was more dramatic. She caught her breath suddenly. A flush burned her face and down her body...
It was in just such nuances that the House of Illusion excelled. Here, tired old roues... could recapture for a price otherwise lost emotions of their abused bodies. (93-94)

What, then, of the pseudoscience? In other novels, van Vogt makes use of Nexiallism, non-Aristotelianism, the Bates system of eye exercises, and Dianetics. I have suggested elsewhere that the wise reader will not take these hobbyhorses too seriously. In _The Weapons Shops of Isher_, we don't have a pseudoscience so much as we have the libertarian philosophy of the Weapon Shops. I am afraid that many younger readers will be led astray by this. They will claim that the novel is a solemn philosophical defense of the second amendment and the National Rifle Association. The truth is that a van Vogt novel-- even a good van Vogt novel-- is never a terribly rational affair. Van Vogt was always more concerned with telling a kind of creative science fiction fairy tale more than he was promoting a rational philosophy. Many times he failed in a spectacular manner. This is not one of his failures. Not by a long shot. Oh, and did I mention that the novel has what Anthony Boucher called one of the greatest curtain lines in all of science fiction?

Confusing and disjointed!
By Paul Weiss
In "The Weapon Shops of Isher", AE van Vogt deals with libertarian philosophy that is best summarized by the slogan he attributes to the weapon shops, "The right to buy weapons is the right to be free". Unlike what many potential readers might imagine, this is not a manifesto for the National Rifle Association. It's a much more soft pedalled carefully considered cautionary tale that is a warning to citizens to be sure they retain the ability to limit the potential power of any government regardless of the form it might take.

Time travel, immortality, the limitation of government power, corruption, invisibility, loyalty, naivete, love, courage, freedom, rebellion, powerful weaponry - all these themes and more are touched on in what many people call a fine example of the golden age of science fiction. But - and I'm willing to admit that perhaps the shortcoming is my own - I frankly failed to understand the charm and I didn't really catch the message. It bothers me to no end when I get to the end of a story and my sole reaction is "Huh ... what just happened?"

Certainly I understood the basic themes but I felt that van Vogt missed the mark. The story line was difficult to follow and consisted of a hodge-podge of disconnected outrageous scientific conjectures, stilted dialogue far worse than sub-title translations of Japanese B-movies, blinding plot jumps and the use of plot devices that seemed arbitrary and pointless (Hedrock's immortality and a gambler with luck that defies all imagination, for example).

In "Voyage of the Space Beagle", van Vogt wrote a series of stories that were clearly the predecessors of today's much loved Star Trek series. As a fan of classic science fiction, a lover of Star Trek in all its incarnations and a reader who has enjoyed van Vogt's other works, I wanted very much to like "The Weapon Shops of Isher". A cynical world-weary friend of mine put it well, "Vast ideas, but only half-vast execution!" Four stars for the ideas, two stars for the writing and the story to support it - call it three stars and suggest that this is a book which would be enjoyed only by hard core classic sci-fi lovers.

Perspecta 40

Perspecta 40Monster The Yale Architectural Journal edited by Marc Guberman, Jacob Reidel, and Frida RosenbergContemporary architecture is in many ways a monstrous thing. It is bigger, more broadly defined, increasingly complicated, more costly, and stylistically and formally heterogeneous--if not downright unhinged. Not only is the scale of the built environment expanding, but so is the territory of the architectural profession itself. A perfect storm of history, technology, economics, politics, and pedagogy has generated a moment in time in which anything seems possible. The results have been at times strange and even frightening. Long ago, the birth of an abnormal creature was interpreted as a sign of looming trouble. These monstra--from the Latin monere, "to warn" and monstrare, "to show"--were viewed with both fear and fascination. This fortieth issue of Perspecta--the oldest and most distinguished student-edited architectural journal in America--examines architecture past and present through the lens of the monster. The contributors--a diverse group of scholars, practitioners, and artists--embrace the multitude of meanings this term carries in an attempt to understand how architecture arrived at its present situation and where it may be going. Perspecta 40 represents in itself a kind of monster--a hybrid, jumbled, conflicting amalgamation of work and ideas that looks at the past in new ways and tells of things to come. Contributors includePhilip Bernstein, Mario Carpo, Arindam Dutta, Ed Eigen, Mark Gage, Gensler, Marcelyn Gow and Ulrika Karlsson (servo), Catherine Ingraham, Mark Jarzombek, Terry Kirk, Leon Krier, Greg Lynn, John May, John McMorrough, Colin Montgomery, Guy Nordenson, Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, Emmanuel Petit, Kevin Roche, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto (Atelier Bow-Wow) and Ryuji Fujimura, Michael Weinstock, Claire ZimmermanMarc Guberman is a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture and the Yale School of Management and is a practicing architect. Review
'An impressive debut. [Sarif's] story brings together the descriptive power of the novelist with the screenwriter's mastery of dialogue: a overarching vision of a community shackled by race and gender, which also registers the small shocks and struggles of two women at its centre' The Times

About the Author
Shamim Sarif is a novelist, screenwriter and film director. She recently wrote and directed the motion picture adaptation of her own novel, The World Unseen. She is also the writer/director of the feature film, I Can't Think Straight, which is based on her novel of the same name. She is the author of the novel Despite the Falling Snow. She lives in London with her partner Hanan and their two children.

Lyrical Prose
By LeonieM
Shamim Sarif appears to possess the gift of writing verse as prose and the world unseen is a fine example of this lyricism. This is not great literature but it certainly is an easy read (I read it in a single sitting), drawing you in to empathize with the characters, rooting for them to succeed. It is a captivating book and I would highly recommend reading it.

At its core is the restrained love story between Amina and Miriam, both astonished by the intensity of their feelings and the common need to break out of their oppressive worlds. It is a story of opposites - of repression and expression, questioning tradition and blind acceptance, of courage and fear, of integrity and deceit, of finding a voice and finally of choices. What really evolves from this story are these broader themes, more universal in their appeal, underscored by each of its remarkable characters as small actions either in defiance of apartheid or convention, an arcane custom or simply humor in the face of adversity. This is possibly the book's greatest strength.

Sarif is smart enough to leave an open ending relative to the era. However, there's a strong argument for a more definitive ending - one that gives the reader some greater assurance of the relationship between these women surviving.

Perhaps the movie offers some better form of closure.

Amazing!
By J. Will
I absolutely loved this book. Shamim has such developed characters and I love how she writes one chapter through one persons point of view, then the following in another, it really helps to understand what is going on. Its easy to follow along, and I read it in two long sittings, you won't be disspointed I promise!

Excellent - But Leaves You Hanging (Kindle Review)
By Robin L. McLaughlin
The World Unseen was a great read. The writing was smooth and effortless to read. The characters were sympathetic and well drawn, including several secondary characters. The prose vividly portrays the time and place in which the characters exist, bringing it all alive within the reader's mind.

If you're looking for a typical lesbian romance though, you may not be that interested. More than one third into the book the two women had only met briefly twice. The story follows their separate lives and then eventually weaves them together. The book is nicely paced, always moving forward. But it's not a fast pace. It's more of a slow moving river as opposed to a rushing torrent.

What I truly appreciated was the glimpse I was given into the ethnic and cultural conflicts of South Africa in the early 1950's. The story takes place near the beginning of apartheid, which was a bit of an eye opener for me in terms of its timing. As Europe and North America moved towards events that would finally bring about more racial equality, South Africa began aggressively moving further in the entirely opposite direction.

The only reason that I didn't rate The World Unseen with 5 stars is because I felt the ending was much too abrupt. I'm not one of those who needs every ending to be nicely tied up and everything clear. Vague or open-ended endings have their place in fiction and it's one that I can often appreciate. But in this case I was expecting a bit more and felt teased by the author. It didn't ruin the book for me by any means, but at the final few paragraphs I was thinking, "Hey wait a minute, you can't stop there!"

Kindle Note: Unfortunately, the Kindle ebook version is a mess in terms of formatting. I am returning the book because I don't believe I should have to pay ten bucks for such a poorly made product, even if the novel itself was excellent. Near the beginning entire blocks of text are indented. After that, indents seem to go away almost completely. This makes reading a chore, especially when dialogue is involved. There are also a lot of errors like dropped words, along with a few places of funky random formatting such as a few words suddenly underlined. I will be contacting the publisher in the hopes that they will pull the ebook and redo it and then inform me when it's done. If so, I will repurchase the ebook and remove this part of my review.

Good Reference
By IZM
I did not know what to expect from this book. I was hoping for a product that would attempt to do what the title says: teach "do it your selfers" how to use the equipment they may already have at home to get a better sound. I was hoping the author would go into explainations of equipment that would help the average person maybe understand a little bit more about how the equipment one is likely to have works and how to use this information to ones advantage in the home studio, which by its very nature will be limited. I think the author did a lot to accomplish all those things. I learned a lot about Mics (which I sorely needed help with). Example would include a small section that explained (and showed diagrams) the various field shapes of different types of mics (some only record sound that enters directly from the front, others can pick up peripheral sounds etc).

One thing I will say is that even though the book is definitely geared towards those that will be recording live instruments there is a lot of useful info for us "in the box" people as well.

I would say the book is worth the current price.

Strong On Recording
By JimF
Reference materials for home recording tends to concentrate on one of two areas of information, recording (tracking) or mixing (post production). The 2012 edition of The Home Recording Handbook by Dave Hunter provides a lot of information about recording.

The Home Recording Handbook has 261 pages of content divided into ten chapters. Chapters 1 to 3 are about 73 pages of content and can be considered introductory information either concerned with terminology or equipment overview. Chapters 4 to 8 are about 120 pages and concentrate on recording techniques for the different instruments typically found in a modern pop band such as drums, bass, acoustic and electric guitar, vocals and keyboard. Chapter 9 is 39 pages concerned with mixing. Chapter 10 is 15 pages that addresses mastering.

An additional twenty pages is spent describing the 99 audio tracks available on the included compact disc. The 99 audio tracks recorded by Dave Hunter provide side-by-side sound comparisons of more than 10 microphones popular in home recording studios on drums, acoustic guitar and vocals. The audio recordings also allow comparison of the recorded sound of multiple guitar amplifier. Some may believe as I do that the book cost is not out of line for the value of the audio cd alone.

Beside the audio cd, there are several other thoughtful choices that illustrate the care and attention given to make sure this book is a worthy addition to your collection. The author uses clear photographs to illustrate microphone and sound damping suggestions. The book pages are spiral bound so the book can lay open at any page. The pages are printed on some of the thickest paper I've ever seen inside a book. The front and rear hard bound covers are over sized to better protect the interior pages. The index is very useful.

The Home Recording Handbook is most useful for the person just beginning to record or for someone seeking to hear a variety of microphones and amplifiers.

Excellent info on recording rock/pop, would need to supplement if you're recording jazz or mostly acoustic instruments
By pounding on the keyboard
Overall an informative read for someone starting out, with the limitation that it's strong on recording rock instruments: guitar, bass, drums, vocals, as well as 2 acoustic instruments, piano and guitar, and gives short shrift to non-rock instruments. This is expected given the author's depth of knowledge on guitars, effects and amps (see his other books) It also doesn't cover what one might call the EDM world: synths, VST's, drum machines, samplers etc which you can't generally ignore as an audio engineer these days. Also a few other things i would have like to see: buying used equipment, modifying microphones (some mods are easy like removing screens, others are e.g. soldering capacitors in) and instrument care: buying shock-absorbing cases, cleaning condensor capsules etc. There's one or two inaccuracies, the bit about how phantom power is in general harmful to ribbon mikes, p44. The section on acoustic treatments is pretty skimpy, 8 pages, and doesn't mention electrical issues e.g. ground loops, or the very effective budget treatments: bookshelves and moving blankets or the more professional O-C 703.

What it does cover, it covers well. There's things like tuning guitars, drums, spending time trying multiple mikes in many positions ona guitar cab, after you've selected the best sounding drivers. There's concrete recommendations on how to work without a separate control booth, as most home recordists do, and on how to use compression, reverb, EQ (there's no discussion of side chaining to carve the bass out of the kick drum's way tho). There's many specific mike recommendations in the < $500 range, most of those mikes are still current models in Jan 2015. the DAW screenshots are protools but but PT-specific and shouldn't hinder any ableton or logic etc users.

So all in all, easily worth the money and a good start for anybody that wants to record with a budget up to a few thousands of US$.
