The first place that I can well remember was a pleasant meadow with a pond of clear water in it. When it was hot we used to stand by the pond in the shade of the trees, and when it was cold we had a warm shed near the grove. There were six young colts in the meadow beside me; they were older than I was. I used to run with them, and had great fun; we used to gallop all together round the field, as hard as we could go. Sometimes we had rather rough play, for they would bite and kick, as well as gallop.

About the Author
Sewell was born in England into a devoutly Quaker family. Her mother was a successful author of children's books. Anna was largely educated at home. When Anna was fourteen she severely injured both of her ankles. For the rest of her life Anna was unable to stand without a crutch or to walk for any length of time. For greater mobility, she frequently used horse-drawn carriages, which contributed to her love of horses. Sewell's only published work was Black Beauty. Although it is now considered a children's classic, she originally wrote it for those who worked with horses. Sewell died five months after her book was published, living long enough to see its initial success.

very disappointed

This was not the full version there is a large portion of the story left out. I got this so I could read it to my daughter and I'm very disappointed so much is missing

Kindle usage

Intended of for my Kindle to encourage use by a 10 year old, worked fairly well. I read it and it was good for me (69 year old).

Black Beauty cut off at the knees

I should have thought about what "young folks edition" means before downloading this. There's a lot missing from this edition, such as stories about cruelty to animals and ways to overcome it. We never find out about Beauty's accident--why did he fall down and break his knees?--and we never hear about why Jerry the cabman was forced to sell him. But to anyone who pretty much has the book memorized already, these things won't matter much.
