About the Author
AUGUST MEIER is a professor emeritus of history at Kent State University. He is the author of Negro Thought in America, 1880-1915, a coauthor, with Elliott Rudwick, of From Plantation to Ghetto and Black History and the Historical Profession, and a coeditor, with John Hope Franklin, of Black Leaders of the Twentieth Century.

The best summary of its kind

This monograph is a clear and succinct account of African American thought in the harsh period, the nadir of the black experience as Rayford Logan said, after Reconstruction. Meier argues that African Americans in this era had two important viewpoints. They believed that self-help through black-organized groups would improve the quality of life for freedmen, and it was imperative that black s do this work. The other argument was that, in a time of increasing Jim Crow in the South (and even in the North to some extent) that agitation for their civil liberties was another necessity for African Americans. Both of these ideas predate the ascendancy of Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. DuBois, whose clash over these attitudes would be a part of the black community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This book is important for any reader interested in the black experience in America.
