WAYMISH: Why are you making it so hard for me to give you my money?, by Ray Considine, Ted Cohn

WAYMISH means Why Are You Making It So Hard...for me to give you my money? A "Waymish" is any dumb mistake made when dealing with a customer. It's the disastrous effect of one minute's lousy service which loses a customer ready and willing to spend money.

One "Waymish." One customer lost. All future profits gone.

The book's examples make excellent staff training material.

Review
"WAYMISH is terrific. You hit the nail on the head with this one! The concept is brilliant (and obvious): employees hate to be wrong. I can visualize hundreds of sales trainers handing out thousands of copies of WAYMISH to front line employees." -- Al Ries, Chairman, Ries & Ries, noted author of "Focus," "Positioning,"and "Marketing Warfare."

"WAYMISH packs a one-two punch: First, it evokes all the service frustrations you've ever experienced as a customer, then dares you to examine your own business to confront the WAYMISH within!" -- Warren Rubin, Chairman of the Workbench, New York, NY (buyers reaction)

"WAYMISH tells it all! Anyone who is in the business of serving customers can read this and if they heed it, need little else in the way of training. It's truly a masterpiece on customer service. Needless to say, you can quote me." -- Barnett Helzberg, Jr., Retired Chairman, Helzberg Diamonds (a Berkshire/Hathaway Company)

Lots of CEO's should read this book
By Robert A. Jacobsen
As a long time small business owner I have read hundreds of business books in my time. Some are good, some pathetic, and some ignorant. I have read useful books and books that are only good for firestarters. Some have been written by P.H.D's who don't have a clue about the real world and some that do - but WAYMISH is by far the best and most useful business book I have ever seen or read. I usually keep a dosen or so copies at the store and regularly send them to business owners or suppliers that I like and companies that need help.

Simply written and easily readable in a few hours - I read it about every 6 months and remind myself that the only reason my customers shop at my store - is because (and if) I provide excellent service.

If you own a business or want to start one BUY THIS BOOK. Don't do it later do it now - you won't regret it. My advice is to buy some extra copies to pass around, after reading it you will want to.

Make sure you & your folks aren't doing this!
By Ben Gay III
First, and in the interest of full disclosure: As many of you know, Ray Considine has been one of my closest personal friends, most trusted mentors/business associates since we first met some 35 years ago. He is, in a word, AWESOME!

Now let's talk about the book "WAYMISH" ("Why Are You Making It So Hard . . . for me to give you my money?").

If you will just purchase/read this book, then carefully study your own sales/customer service techniques against it (and those of your entire organization!), you'll quickly discover that you are probably throwing away 20-40% of all your established and potential sales volume. And I'm not exaggerating!

While the "WAYMISH" stories of poor service/missed sales are amusing at first (some are absolutely hysterical!), as you read on, you'll see far more of your own sales/customer service operation than you'd ever want . . . to the point that you'll become absolutely uncomfortable at times. I sure was!

As you know, when going about your own day-to-day activities, the sales/customer service world is frequently staffed by the untrained (our fault!) and absolute morons (accident of birth, I assume). Well, here's a news flash! While we laugh at those poor, sad folks . . . THEY ARE AMONG US! Or, as "Pogo" once said, "We have met the enemy and he is us!"

See, while my "The Closers" series will teach you everything you need to know about closing sales, if you're letting them all get out the back door after that, you can't close enough sales to save yourself!

Let me cut it short with some personal advice: Buy "WAYMISH" from Amazon.com . . . right now, while you're still on this page!

Note: You may have noticed that all of my book reviews carry "5 Star" ratings (*****). But that's not the sign of a "soft reviewer." I only review books to which I can honestly give a "5 Star" rating. You may assume, therefore, that any sales training/self-improvement book without my "5 Star" rating is either something less that "5 Star," or I simply haven't gotten to it yet . . . and there are certainly plenty of those!

This book should be read by anybody who deals with customers.
By Blaine Greenfield
WAYMISH: WHY ARE YOU MAKING IT SO HARD FOR ME TO GIVE YOU MY MONEY? by Ray Considine and Ted Cohen is a book that should be read by anybody who deals with customers.

It presents lessons that may seem obvious, but unfortunately, many businesses seem to forget the obvious. The result: Customers, facing difficulties, often go elsewhere.

What truly made WAYMISH outstanding was its use of examples, all taken from real companies on how things could and should be done . . . one of my favorites involved Murray Raphel, my marketing guru, during his clothing days:

* [He delivered] a looks-like-every-other London fog trench coat: but in his, your name appears in a HUGE monogram on the inside front flap. "So you can always find your coat on a rainy day in a restaurant cloakroom."

I'm still shaking my head over that one, as well as how other stores approach things:

* At Nordstrom the rule is, "Treat your customers as you would a friend." At Carl Sewell's car dealership the decision to charge for an extra service is, "Would you charge a friend for this?" In essence, it's common sense.

And then there was this approach to marketing research that could be used by any business--or any other organization for that matter:

* A managing partner of a CPA firm was thinking customer service. He called the 25 largest clients and asked for three minutes of the CEO's time to answer two questions:

The Survey:
What do you like about our firm's service?
What do you not like about our firm...or any other CPA

(Note: This is the best and simplest survey any business will ever need.)

Though the authors probably had customer service folks in mind when they wrote WAYMISH, it could and should be read by countless others who deal with the public on any sort of regular basis. Just imagine how much more pleasant life would be if everybody made each and every transaction a pleasant one.

Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition, by Jason Gregory

Hailed as a "must-have textbook" (CHOICE, January 2010), the first edition of Game Engine Architecture provided readers with a complete guide to the theory and practice of game engine software development. Updating the content to match today’s landscape of game engine architecture, this second edition continues to thoroughly cover the major components that make up a typical commercial game engine.

New to the Second Edition

  • Information on new topics, including the latest variant of the C++ programming language, C++11, and the architecture of the eighth generation of gaming consoles, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4
  • New chapter on audio technology covering the fundamentals of the physics, mathematics, and technology that go into creating an AAA game audio engine
  • Updated sections on multicore programming, pipelined CPU architecture and optimization, localization, pseudovectors and Grassman algebra, dual quaternions, SIMD vector math, memory alignment, and anti-aliasing
  • Insight into the making of Naughty Dog’s latest hit, The Last of Us

The book presents the theory underlying various subsystems that comprise a commercial game engine as well as the data structures, algorithms, and software interfaces that are typically used to implement them. It primarily focuses on the engine itself, including a host of low-level foundation systems, the rendering engine, the collision system, the physics simulation, character animation, and audio. An in-depth discussion on the "gameplay foundation layer" delves into the game’s object model, world editor, event system, and scripting system. The text also touches on some aspects of gameplay programming, including player mechanics, cameras, and AI.

An awareness-building tool and a jumping-off point for further learning, Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition gives readers a solid understanding of both the theory and common practices employed within each of the engineering disciplines covered. The book will help readers on their journey through this fascinating and multifaceted field.

"… this book is the best of its kind, and you’re lucky to have found it. It covers the huge field of game engine architecture in a succinct, clear way, and expertly balances the breadth and depth of its coverage, offering enough detail that even a beginner can easily understand the concepts it presents. The author, Jason Gregory, is not only a world expert in his field; he’s a working programmer with production-quality knowledge and many shipped game projects under his belt. … Jason is also an experienced educator who has taught in the top-ranked university game program in North America. … the many detailed code samples and implementation examples in this book will help you understand just how the pieces come together in a great game. By helping you in this way, Jason’s book might just empower you to outstrip even the most audacious dreams of history’s best game designers and developers."

Jason Gregory's "Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition" is deserving of five stars! Highly recommended!
By [KNDY] Dennis A. Amith
Jason Gregory's "Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition" is one of the BEST book on those who want to program games!

It's important to note that this is not a beginner book, you will need to have experience with C++ before you delve into this book as it can be used as a course text for a two or three course college-level series in intermediate game programming. It's also an excellent book for those learning about self-programming of games, especially as this touches upon the architecture of the eighth generation of gaming consoles - the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

For those wondering what the second edition has vs. the first, Jason goes into the latest variant of the C++ programming language, C++ 11 and the architecture of the current next gen consoles.

He also fills some gaps in the content of the original book, a new chapter on audio technology and his wanting to cover the fundamentals of the physics, mathematics and technology of the creation of major AAA games.

Also, fixing errors from the first book.

Here is the break down of Jason Gregory's "Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition":

I. Foundations
1. Introduction - Structure of a typical game team, what is a game?, what is a game engine?, engine differences across genres, game engine survey, runtime engine architecture, tools and the asset pipeline

2. Tools of the Trade - Version Control, Microsoft Visual Studio, Profiling Tools, Memory Leak and Corruption Detection

3. Fundamentals of Software Engineering for Games - C++ Review and Best Practices, Data, Code and Memory, Catching and Handling Errors, Pipelines, Caches and Optimization

4. 3D Math for Games - Solving 3D Problems in 2D, Points and Vectors, Matrices, Quaternions, Comparison of Rotational Representations, Other Useful Mathematical Objects, Hardware-Accelerated SIMD Math, Random Number Generation

II. Low-Level Engine System
5. Engine Support Systems
6. Resourece and the File System
7. The Game Loop and Real-Time Simulation
8. Human Interface Devices (HID)
9. Tools for Debugging and Development

III. Graphics, Motion and Sound
10. Rendering Engine
11. Animation Systems
12. Collision and Rigid Body Dynamics
13. Audio

IV. Gameplay
14. Introduction to Gameplay Systems
15. Runtime Gameplay Foundation Systems

V. Conclusion
16. You Mean There is More - Engines that weren't covered, gameplay systems

Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with this book and there is so much coverage of game engine architecture, I was literally in awe of how much Jason Gregory put into this book.

Not only do I recommend it for professors searching for a book on game engine architecture for their curriculum but not only does "Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition" work as an academic book but also those wanting a self-programming book as it thoroughly goes into the nitty gritty of today's modern game engines.

It's simply one of the best books on the market right now. Yes, some may hesitate on its price but trust me, the wealth of information in this book is priceless.

Jason Gregory's "Game Engine Architecture, Second Edition" is deserving of five stars! Highly recommended!

A pleasant and informative stroll through all aspects of game engine development
By Timothy Lovett
I've wanted to get my hands on Jason Gregory's second edition of Game Engine Architecture since I saw it pop up on my coming soon to Amazon list. I was lucky to be given the opportunity to review the book because it was something I really wanted and would have purchased shortly thereafter had I not been given this opportunity. I'm a software engineer by day working in Ruby on Rails for web development but I do casual development with the Unreal Engine and I have experience working with Ogre3d and Bullet Physics for my own little sandbox (I think that the best way to really learn the stuff is to get neck deep in it despite the benefits of a 3rd party engine).

Comparing the books physically the second edition has a slightly nicer binding on it. Both are massive in size but the second edition definitely is a bit bigger. There were 860 pages in the 1st edition and 1014 in the 2nd counting the indexes.

Like the origin the book does a great job covering a massive amount of subjects from physics packages, graphic engines, and the like to even covering the deadzone of analog input controllers. It's all really a basic introduction to a series of complex subjects that warrant further reading to really gain a full grasp on. I have plenty of books alone related to rendering (Real Time Rendering is a nice gem) and even 3d mathematics with vectors. You just can't pick it all up in one book and anyone thinking this is going to cover things at that level hasn't grasped the size of the material involved. The book is over 1000 pages and it's just scratching the surface, game development is a lifetime chore/pleasure. Jason does have some example code in the book covering different functionality but it never overwhelms the subject like some other game engine books I've read (Game Coding Complete felt like it was primarily code but they both have their purposes).

It was nice to see the new audio chapter Jason mentioned would be coming with the "There's more" section of the first edition. Would be nice if the book could cover more AI and networking related topics but I understand that at 1000 pages there's really no room left for a more in depth look. There are actually books out there specifically for both topics I'd recommend.

Needless to say the book is great. I was able to quickly leaf through and check for some changes to some of the existing chapters I had read (although a lot is reused from the first edition as one would imagine) and I felt like the new content is definitely worth it.

I don't know what else to say -- I highly recommend it and was giddy when it arrived. It's worth having if you plan on getting into any moderate game development. Even if you're just using an engine with its own domain specific language that abstracts the coding it's good to know how things work under the hood. This book is my new favorite -- now to somehow convince my wife I'm not hoarding by keeping the old edition too (although the size of the book will make this hard). Love it.

Undeniably, the best introduction to an amazing subject
By Ivy Reisner
The book is comprehensive in its coverage, everything from game physics, graphics, and audio to how to set up code repositories like Visual Source Safe and Subversion. As a result, you will need additional resources to deep dive into many of these areas, but after reading this book, you will know exactly what your options are, and where to deep dive. It covers all the generation 7 and 8 hardware, including the PlayStation Eye, the PlayStation Camera, both versions of Kinect, and the WiiMote, and for that it does go into a great deal of detail. The balance seems to be that the book will skim over topics that would be well covered elsewhere or would show up in other types of software design, and go into greater detail on the areas where other resources are sparse, and it strikes a very good balance in doing so. It is arguably the best first book on the subject.

The tone is serious. You won't get the cartoon people of the "For Dummies" or "Head First" series. You won't get the hand-holding of the "in 24 Hours"/"in 21 Days" series. It is far closer to a graduate school level textbook. It isn't dry, however, and the tone isn't as pretentious as most grad school textbooks. It's clear. It's engaging. Even someone who does not have a background in computer science and software development should be able to follow it.

I would have preferred more code samples, but for a book that mostly provides a view from 10,000 feet, that would be asking a bit much. The ones provided are clear and concise. The language choice of C++ is a good one, first because it is largely used in game design (not exclusively, of course, but it is a popular choice) and second because so many other languages -- Perl, Java, Python, C#, and more, are based off of C++, so the code is familiar to people who work in those descendant languages.

The only caveat I have is the Kindle version. I could not download the sample, as it says the format used it incompatible with pretty much everything. If you plan to buy the ebook version, take down the sample first, and make certain you can read it on your device.

Imagine The Sopranos transplanted to the French countryside….

This thrillingly comic, internationally bestselling Mafia farce is the inspiration for the major motion picture The Family starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones, and produced by Martin Scorsese.

The Blakes are newcomers to a small town in Normandy. Fred is a historian researching the Allied landings, Maggie enjoys charity work, and their kids are looking forward to meeting other teenagers at the local lycée. Or so it seems.

In fact, Fred is really Giovanni Manzoni, an ex-goodfella turned stool pigeon who’s been relocated from New Jersey to France by the FBI’s witness protection program. He’s got a two-million-dollar bounty on his head, but he and his family can’t help attracting attention (imagine the Sopranos in Normandy). And when imprisoned mobster Don Mimino gets wind of their location, it’s Mafia mayhem à la Josh Bazell’s Beat the Reaper, or like The Godfather as if written by Carl Hiaasen. Because while you can take the man out of the Mafia, you can’t take the Mafia out of the man.

Malavita is a good read, indeed
By Tony Covatta
First off, I have seen the trailer of the movie based on the book, "The Family," which has not yet been released. As in so many other cases, I predict on limited evidence that the book is superior to the film. De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones are excellent actors, but the movie appears to have reduced what is an excellent and unusual book to the Hollywood stereotypes. Good Fellas goes to France. Lots of action and not much meaning. Fun to see if you like that sort of thing, and I will see it, but the book has so much more than casting Don Corleone as a comedian living in retirement in France. Maybe unfair, since I only have the trailer to base this comparison on, but I predict that I am correct.

Focussing on the book, which I did read cover to cover, it is always interesting to read books about America and Americans written by Europeans who don't live here. Kafka's "Amerika"is an example, as is Brecht's weird play, "In the Jungle of Cities." To Benacquista's credit, he gets American folkways, including the Mafia down pretty well. He does put Green Bay in Michigan, and the translator must be an Englishwoman, as there are a number of "blokes" in the story and people are getting "sorted out" and the like. Minor errors however. The text reads easily and smoothly.

The real strength of the book is that the characters have depth. Fred/Giovanni, Maggie/Livia and the kids, Warren and the aptly named Belle think and speak about issues of good and evil, honesty and deceit intelligently and insightfully. Benacquista talks knowledgably about the criminal psyche, and the book shows tellingly what makes and breaks marriages and other relationships between people who do or should love each other, all while telling an interesting story.

Those looking for a rollicking crime romp with no excursion into deeper meaning can skip this one. But for readers who like mysteries and serious analysis of what makes people tick in the same book. there is a lot here.

While the extended passage in the middle of the book tracing how the school magazine from the kids' Lycée makes its way around the world looks at first like a diversion, it is not. It relates forward and back to the lives of the characters throughout the book.

The book does have its weaknesses. Warrens's adventures as a 13 year old Godfather at his school are only glanced at. An opportunity missed. Not enough time is spent on telling us about what makes Belle so inwardly as well as outwardly beautiful. And I don't think the author gets the hang of the Witness Protection Program exactly right.

But these flaws are balanced by the extraordinary feat of the author in making Giovanni a believable apprentice writer, not forgetting that he is a very bad man with a heavily scarred psyche.

I fear that the film, soon to be released, will give the book a bad name, establishing mistaken and far too low expectations. This is not just a serio-comic thriller. It is an interesting cross between a crime thriller and a psychological and sociological profile of people at the crossroads of good and ill in their lives.

I liked the dog too. Highly recommended.

Sequel to The Sopranos?
By TChris
If, like most viewers, you were wondering "what comes next?" after the screen turned black at the end of the last Sopranos episode, you can imagine Malavita as the Sopranos sequel. Unfortunate events forced the Blake family to leave Newark, and then to leave Paris, and then to leave the Cote d'Azur before making their way to a village in Normandy. Along the way they were joined by an Australian Cattle Dog named Malavita. The cause of their journey is not revealed until chapter two, but the reader knows that it has something to do with Fred, "in the days when he was still called Giovanni." Having come into possession of a typewriter, Fred is posing as a writer, a cover story that disturbs both his wife Maggie (who regards her husband as barely literate) and, after Fred decides he should write his memoir, his exasperated FBI handler. The writing exposes Fred's checkered past to the reader while dredging up a sense of vulnerability that Fred has rarely experienced.

The Blakes are a family of sociopaths. Young Warren's ambition is to become a Godfather while his aptly named sister Belle guards her untouchable beauty with violent vigor. Maggie might burn down your house as retribution for a perceived insult, but her French neighbors revere her as a volunteer for charitable causes. Fred is widely regarded as a worldly pack leader, a community protector. Near the story's midpoint, Tonino Benacquista treats the reader to a departure, a series of short stories connected by a school newspaper. The circuitous route traveled by the newspaper turns out to be integral to the plot, but the stories are enjoyable standing alone.

Benacquista keeps the tone light, making it possible for the tolerant reader to like the Blakes, just as viewers liked Tony Soprano while cringing at his behavior. Fred is who he is, and Benacquista helps the reader understand why. Benacquista's approach to storytelling makes it possible to step back from the criminal nature of the Blake family and to look beneath the surface to find traits and circumstances with which the reader can identify. Crime families, after all, have the same domestic issues as other families. In fact, we understand Fred better than Fred -- a man baffled by honest people who "trust in a world that had to be obeyed" -- understands us. And even if we can't identify with Belle's narcissism or Warren's lust for power or Fred's indifference to his family (although he cares about his dog, so how bad can he be?), those characteristics (exaggerated for comedic effect but recognizable in people we know) can make us laugh.

Malavita exposes the hypocrisy of people who make a point of holding themselves out as morally superior to (or holier than) the wayward Blakes. Which is worse, the novel implicitly asks: the Mafia kingpin or the factory owners who poison the village water supply? French pomposity, Italian appetites, and American arrogance all add humor to Benacquista's story. By the novel's end, Fred is redeemed in a small but meaningful way. Malavita doesn't have the depth of character that The Sopranos developed, but it tells a funny, fast-moving story without wasting words. That made it worthwhile for me.

Love, love, love, love this book.
By Victoria M. Pond
Words fail me. I cannot describe how wonderful this book is. It charmed and enchanted me so much that I was annoyed when my husband interrupted my reading to take me out to. Dinner. I haven't felt that way about a book in a long time. The writing is straightforward, brisk, funny, cruel, abrupt, and believable. This is the kind of book that Diane Johnson would write if she could ever match her performance in Le Divorce.

I say this not because I'm so fascinated by the subject matter (I have no interest in mobsters, per se), but because the writing is just so damn good.

My only complaint: the English translation is at times clumsy. An American is quoted as talking about "maths"; no American would ever call the subject anything but "math." A woman is "resigned to him going away so often"; it should be, of course, "she was resigned to HIS going away so often." "Every one of his would be killers were" should, of course, be "every one . . . was." And so on. The English translator seems to lack a basic understanding of English grammar. This problem distracts from otherwise highly polished writing.

Happy-Performing Managers: The Impact of Affective Wellbeing And Intrinsic Job Satisfaction in the Workplace (New Horizons in Management Se

This book provides contemporary means to solve an age-old conundrum in management - do happy workers perform better? Decades of research and empirical evidence have been unable to establish a strong link between affective well-being, intrinsic job satisfaction and managers' performance. A unique methodology, fresh empirical evidence and a definitive analysis of previous theory and research are employed to support the happy productive worker thesis. The authors test a kindred idea - the 'happy-performing managers' proposition, using advanced statistical techniques. Performance is measured to a previously unachievable level. New empirical evidence is used to predict how affective wellbeing and intrinsic job satisfaction influences managers' contextual and task performance. These findings are argued to have significantly progressed our understanding of what underpins human performance at work. The book prescribes how managers' jobs might be changed to enhance or avoid a decline in happiness because managers' performance is impacting as never before on organisational productivity and the economic prosperity of nation-states. Extraordinary shifts in the global corporate environment mean managers' 'personal troubles' have now become 'public concerns'. An emerging movement to Positive Organisational Scholarship is countering such forces by developing ways to create positive human and organisational wellbeing. "Happy-Performing Managers" will be invaluable to academics, postgraduate students, human resource practitioners, executives and managers who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the factors that influence human performance in the workplace.

Must read
By LngLvPlstn
Palestine, Israel, and the U.S. Empire is a book for laypeople and experts alike. Those who are completely new to the subject will be guided through every step of the colonization of Palestine, with a clear analysis of all significant events and political dynamics. Those who are well versed on the issue will gain a deeper understanding of U.S. support for Israel, the vital role Israel plays for U.S. imperialism, and the way forward for the struggle.

The author is not only a widely recognized expert on Middle East affairs, but has also been in the streets and a lead organizer of the largest demonstrations in history in defense of the Palestinian people.

(And to correct a previous review, Becker does, in fact, explain in detail the serious error that the USSR made in supporting the creation of Israel)

A necessary read on the Palestine-Israel issue
By J.D. Thomas
This is a very well researched and written piece on the Palestine-Israel conflict. It details the underpinnings of the creation of the state of Israel, how the Palestinians suffered colonialism, and how the conflict has progressed. It takes a very important view of the class dynamics at issue. Buy this book!

If you believe in freedom and dignity, if your heart bleeds for Palestine read this passionate cry from Mr Becker for international solidarity with the Palestinians in support of their unwavering struggle against a savage & relentless superpower and how far imperial policies can go to achieve their goals.Well written although with leftist leanings. The author does not mention the role of the USSR in their early recognition of the establishment of Israel, nor does he mention how much Russia benefited from ridding itself of these radical ghetto dwellers in Poland & central Europe.

I truly agree with the author a One State Solution is the only fair & just road to peace. Excellent read.

Review

"It will fascinate anyone interested in how fiction gets put together.  For the young writer it will become a necessary handbook, a stern judge, an encouraging friend... In the first half of the book, Gardner investigated just what fiction is.  In the second half, he treats specific technical matters. The Art of Fiction is filled with lecture counsel, wise encouragement." -John L'Heureux, The New York Times Book Review

"A densely packed book of advice to all writers, not just young ones... It is serious, provocative, and funny, and I recommend it to anyone who cares about literature."- Margaret Manning, The Boston Globe

"He lays out virtually everything a person might want to know [about] how to say it, with good and bad examples and judgments falling like autumn leaves in a November storm." -William McPherson, The Washington Post

"The next best thing to graduate workshop in fiction writing. Drawing on examples from Homer to Kafka to Joyce Carol Oates, Gardner unravels the mysteries of plot, sentence structure, diction, and point of view." - Book-of-the-Month Club News

From the Inside Flap
"John Gardner was famous for his generosity to young writers, and (this book) is his . . . gift to them. The Art of Fiction will fascinate anyone interested in how fiction gets put together. For the young writer, it will become a necessary handbook, a stern judge, an encouraging friend."--The New York Times Book Review.

Still relevant for writers today
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann
I recently re-read this classic book on writing fiction, and found it as relevant today as it was when it was first published. Because Gardner strives for "higher art", his musings and instructions for the beginner go much deeper than ordinary how-to books. His lengthy chapter titled "Interest and Truth" gets to the heart of what fiction needs to be, whether one is writing literary fiction or a crime novel. His "Common Errors" chapter, although relatively short and sounding as basic as one can get, offers some of the best advice on how to improve one's writing, from suggestions to creating dynamic sentences to how to imbue narrative with emotion. "Technique" covers topics such as paying attention to rhythm and word choice and building narrative suspense. Although I yawned during the chapter on plot - Gardner's diagrams and attempts at describing structure were too mechanical for my tastes, I'm sure some readers will read it voraciously. Likewise, his thorough compilation of writing exercises will have some reaching eagerly for their keyboards. I found that the sections that had interested me on my first reading years ago were not the same ones that intrigued me this time, suggesting that this book can grow with the writer.
The biggest flaw in this book, and one which might drive some readers away, is Gardner's personal biases. His intense interest in myth and classics drove his fiction, and it weighs heavily in the examples he provides. Also, he favors examples from his contemporaries - Barthleme, Coover, Barth - who might not interest younger writers who read a different set of cutting edge authors. Still, you need not be familiar with Gardner's examples to understand his points, as he himself makes few assumptions about the reader/student.
Even professional writers can benefit from Gardner's reminders since a revisiting of ideas can only sharpen one's fiction. Aspiring writers will leave these pages with an eagerness to attack their own work and with a set of wise guidelines to help them achieve their best work.

The best Creative Writing text book there is.
By JR Pinto
I bought this book about ten years ago; it was the text book in an undergrad Creative Writing class. It wasn't until last year that I really read it. I have just finished reading it again for the second time.
I think that all of Gardner's advice for beginning writers is valid. I was shocked at the negative reviews that some other readers have posted. They find fault with Gardner because he makes reference to classic works of literature. First off, one does not have to have read EVERY book that Gardner makes reference to in order to understand his point.
What shocks me is that people seem genuinely offended that Gardner thinks that aspiring writers should read! EVERY creative writing teacher expects his students to read as much good literature as possible. Why is this? Because IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE A GOOD WRITER UNLESS ONE IS WELL READ. You don't believe me - just ask Stephen King. If you are offended that Gardner expects you to be familiar with names like Hemmingway and Faulkner, you should be ashamed of yourself.
The elitism argument isn't even supported by the text. Sure he talks about Homer and Shakespeare, but he also comments that great writing can also be found in Spider-Man comic books and other unlikely sources. (I am comforted because the negative reviews themselves are not very well-written.)
These are dangerous times we live in. People no longer want to hear that they can't just pick up a pen and be the next Fitzgerald. And who's to say that Fitzgerald is any better than James Paterson, say? It's all relative, is it not?
It is not.
This is a book for the serious writer - for ANY writer who wishes to write better. In order to do that, one must do the work. If this book makes writing sound like a hard thing to do, that is because WRITING IS A HARD THING TO DO. If it is not, you are doing it wrong.
Gardner covers all aspects of fiction techniques: plot, style, genres, voice - everything a beginning writer NEEDS TO AT LEAST CONSIDER. If you don't like this book, find another book on the art of fiction...but I fear you will have the same reaction. Any creative writing book worth its salt will offer the same advice.

Absolutely and unequivocably the best
By Sunnye Tiedemann
I wish this book didn't specify young writers in its subtitle because that's likely to turn away older writers if they haven't heard about Gardner and his books. That would be quite a loss but for Gardner and the readers.
As a published author of many book reviews as well as magazine articles and newspaper pieces, I was at a loss as to where to turn when I needed advice on writing fiction. My solution was to take a course and this book was the required reading. Otherwise I would have overlooked it since I would in no way classify myself as young.
It's simply one of the best books available, especially for those who want to write literary fiction and who care about the quality of his/her writing. Character building, plotting, vocabulary, sentence structure, style and the idea of fiction as a dream are studied in depth here. It is a book to be studied and re-studied, read and re-read, for as the reader practices writing fiction and gains more experience, there's more to be found.
At the back of the book there are exercises. These are best done in a group so that you can get the benefits of others' critiques. The concepts here are deep and often open to more than one interpretation -- those come out in a group setting.
Read carefully. Be sure you understand the subtleties of what he's saying. If you give this one a shallow reading, you're likely to misinterpret. If you do, you'll loose a lot.
I'd put this at the top of my favorites books in a list of books for writers along with Jack Bickham's, Dwight Swain's and Gary Provost's books on the craft.

The Making of Modern Social Psychology: The Hidden Story of How an International Social Science was Created, by Serge Moscovici, Ivana Mar

This fascinating book makes an important contribution to the history of the social sciences. It tells the largely hidden story of how social psychology became an international social science, vividly documenting the micro-politics of a virtually forgotten committee, the Committee on Transnational Social Psychology, whose work took place against the back-drop of some of the most momentous events of the twentieth century. Overcoming intellectual, institutional and political obstacles, including the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, and the military coups in Chile or Argentine, the committee struggled to bring social psychology to global recognition, not as part of a programme of intellectual imperialism, but motivated by a mixture of intellectual philanthropy and self-interest. Few authors could tell this unique story. Serge Moscovici is undoubtedly the best-placed insider to do so, together with Ivana Markova providing a lucid, erudite and carefully documented account of the work of this remarkable group.

This book will be an essential resource for any scholar interested in the history of social psychology, as well as upper-level students studying the history of the social sciences.

Review
"It has been a great pleasure to read this book – its thorough scholarship and entertaining writing style make it into a masterpiece. As a concise history of recent social psychology worldwide (1960s-1970s), it is a unique treatise on the institutional moves and personal relationships of leading social psychologists on both sides of the Atlantic. This sophisticated case study adds a crucial voice to historical and sociological scholarship. It will be particularly useful at graduate and postgraduate levels – in courses on history of psychology in general, and in special seminars on history of social psychology. This book covers the material precisely as I would like, and will be ideal for use in my seminars as core reading."

Joan Valsiner, Professor of Psychology, Clark University, USA, and Editor, Culture & Psychology

"This is a richly documented and vivid account of key events in the formation of an academic discipline. It shows how individuals make history, albeit not in conditions of their own making, by seeking an alternative path for the globalization of knowledge. The book traces the apparent failure of the project of rescuing a social psychology of human beings from the global diffusion of a local USA model (individualists, prescriptive, ethnocentric). Ironically, this "invisible college" was initiated by a visionary group of US scholars mobilizing allies in Europe, Latin America, and Asia under adverse Cold-War conditions. This is an encouraging book. The project of a universally relevant social psychology will continue to inspire the quest for genuine human understanding."

Martin W. Bauer, Director MSc Social and Public Communication, Institute of Social Psychology & Methodology Institute, London School of Economics

"This fascinating and important book makes out a carefully documented and persuasive case that one virtually forgotten committee, more than any other body, was responsible for shaping the international social psychology we know today. The book will be an essential source for future research on and understanding of the history of social psychology and anyone with an interest in that history really should read it."

Colin Fraser, Department of Social Developmental Psychology, University of Cambridge

A disappointing historical review
By J. Michael Innes
The institution of social psychology is a product entirely of the 20th century and one that has only recently entered the public consciousness, whereby commentators and analysts are able and prepared to use the theories and findings of social psychologists in preparing their accounts of social events and processes. The concept of "cognitive dissonance", for example, appearing for the first time in the writings of Leon Festinger in the mid-1950s, has only in the past decade entered the lexicon of commentators, and the work of Stanley Milgram, on obedience and deference to authority, has again only relatively recently become current (and contestably so) in the debate on genocide and the history and understanding of the Holocaust. The history and representation of social psychology as an institution has also been almost universally American-centric. Most social psychologists are trained and work in the United Sates and bring to the discipline their own culture and world views. This book, by two renowned European trained and acculturated social psychologists, provides a history of the development of the discipline in Europe. It shows how diversity of epistemology and history can change and advance the understanding of the processes and outcomes of human social behaviour. The European social psychologists who engaged with American social psychologists in the 1960s brought to bear a wealth of experience about human behaviour that was ill-represented in American thought. Serge Moscovici himself, a Czech citizen trained in France, and Henri Tajfel, a Polish psychologist trained in Britain, had personal experiences that could and did transform the ways in which everyday social contexts could be understood.

This historical account presents the development of the joint work between American and European psychologists to create and to succour the existence of a European social psychology, developing the best of the American work and representing the European experience. This is a work that can truly present the epistemology and the history of the creation of an institution. The problem is that, although it is based so primarily upon the personal experiences of the two authors, it fails really to ignite the excitement in the reader that it should. It is so personal, so based upon the diaries of the authors, and the day to day work of committees and budgets and minutiae, that the expansion of the consciousness of the protogonists is never demonstrated. There is no excitement of an intellectual history. This is a history of an institution. Institutional and organisation history is important, of course, but for a discipline to develop and to expand there must be the understanding of the sources of the discipline, not simply an account of who paid for what and when. As a person with a real experience of what it was to live as a social psychologist if those times, as a member of a pivotal summer school organized by the European Association in 1967, when a whole way of looking at social behaviour was changed by the excitement of group participation and the dynamics of social interaction, this book is a pale imitation of that experience.

This is an important volume for historians of social psychology. But it is not able to give to that history the vital ingredient of the personal, of the idiographic, which, however biased and flawed that may be, nonetheless gives the vital element to what is a human and social experience.
