I used this book for IB Business & Management and I all say is that it is an AMAZING book. The concepts are made easier to understand, there are case studies that you can use to practice, and it really helped me stay on top of the class and as well as my IB exam. Highly recommended!

Good Resource

This book is hard to get and costs a lot to order from Australia so it was great that it was available on Amazon. The book was used, but in decent condition. I did have to pay for some postage as it was short a dollar or two.

It is a great resource for anyone taking IB Business and Management.

Full of Mistakes

Hasenfratz and Jambeck's book attempts to remove the philology from the study of Old English and make it available to a wider audience. Ignoring the mistakes in the book (which will be addressed momentarily), this can be seen as good from the point of view of non-academics or the many English grad students who plan to forget Old English as soon as they're done. However, academics actively interested in the field of Old English are much better served by Mitchell and Robinson's Guide to Old English. As far as the mistakes, the first edition of the book is full of them. The website contains many corrections, if you feel like taking the time to look there. Unfortunately, the greatest concentration of mistakes occurs in the two page reference grammar at the end of the book and on the website, which as of mid September when I printed mine out, remains mostly uncorrected. As a result, you must constantly cross-check the reference grammar with both the material in the book and with other books on Old English. The entire paradigm given for weak adjectives which change stems is wrong, and unless you compare with Mitchell and Robinson, you will never have any idea.

In conclusion, if a second edition is ever released which corrects the many mistakes, it will probably be a good text if you have a passing interest in Old English. But for now (or if you're seriously interested in Old English), the more traditional books such as Mitchell and Robinson are still your best bets.

Revised Edition: A Great Single-source Textbook for Intro Old English Learners

I used this book for a summer course introducing the entirety of Old English grammar, with some accompanying vocabulary. The course was online, meaning I just read the book on my own and did translations on my own, with very little supervising.

I have read through Mitchell's book and other, older more "Memorize-first" books, and think "Reading Old English: revised edition" is the best for my learning style.

If I had the time--which I didn't at the time I took the class--I would have liked to go slower and take advantage of combining the book with "Word Hoard", another excellent book targeting the vocabulary of the Anglo-Saxon period, with cognates, history, and etymologies included. I now have Word Hoard, and enjoy thumbing through it in my free time.

All-in-all, this is a good book, for self study or class work. If you just want to read Old English, and are going to study on your own, I think using this book with Word Hoard and an occasional look at Mitchell will propel you to success PROVIDED THAT you take it slow and aim for mastery before moving on to the next level.

Intro to Old English

The first edition has some typos, but it is much more user friendly than other Old English textbooks. Apparently, the authors envision it being used in a 6-7 week course, but that is too short a time for people. It just takes longer than that to memorize solidly all the necessary forms. Despite its minor problems, I highly recommend it.

A Very Powerful Book!

This book helped me understand the meaning of God's word and the stories He uses to illustrate His point, like The Prodigal Son, the conversion of Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus, and the conversion of 17th century slave trader turned abolitionist preacher, John Newton. In addition, I got a good definition of Grace, Mercy, and Justification. It made me think.

Their conversions did not happen overnight. Saul of Tarsus, a Hebrew by birth, a Roman citizen who spoke Greek, and understood Aramaic, which was the language Jesus spoke, persecuted Christians and was on his way to Damascus to arrest the sect he found there before he heard the voice of God say "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"

John Newton was a slave trader. He understood the Scriptures thanks to his mother, but he was rebellious. Like the Prodigal Son, grace came when they both hit bottom. In this case, he went below to get a knife for the captain during a storm. The man who took his place on deck was swept overboard. When he retired, the captain that took his place aboard ship was lost at sea.

The trials we Christians go through are a test of faith and endurance. If the Lord removed us from every trial we faced, we wouldn't grow in understanding. By leading us through it, we sometimes understand the reason.

Dr. Jeremiah's words are both timely and timeless. This is a powerful book.

Regardless of what we have done in the past, no one is beyond the reach of our loving God! What a blessing it is to know that God loves ME (despite all my failures and all my faults)! Using John Newton's hymn "Amazing Grace" as his outline, Dr. Jeremiah explains how God lovingly extends an offer of grace to each and every sinner. Our choice is to accept His offer--or not.

Minor issue with book, but I'm still giving it 5 stars. Here's why:

Zed Shaw is famous for writing 'Learn Python the Hard Way', and this book is essentially the Ruby equivalent. Many Ruby books focus on Rails, and there are few exercise-focused resources out there. This book is entirely exercise-centric, and gives you plenty of chances to learn by example. Rails (web framework) and Chef (DevOps configuration management framework) beginning to intermediate users could also benefit heavily from this book, since it covers the right amount you'd need for tackling either one of those.

My only issue is that it's written by a Pythonista that has converted the Python version to a Ruby book. This means that some style is lost in translation. I recommend using the Tailor gem or Rubocop to get a good idea for what's missing style-wise. One very good example is defining or calling functions without arguments: in Ruby, you don't use function(), you would just use 'function'. Also, there are some Python-y rants about "functions" v.s. "methods". While I'm not arguing with him over semantics (never argue with programmers over semantics), it seems a little trite. It could just as easily be called "Learn Ruby the Hard Way, from a Pythonista". Ultimately, you're going to interact with the Ruby community, not Zed Shaw, so keep in mind that a Ruby-centric style is important.

Again, this is still one of the best resources for beginning-level Ruby, if not the best I've seen. I may have more feedback after using this as a training tool for a few friends, so feel free to ask any questions!

A Great Way to Learn Ruby

Learn Ruby the Hard Way is a bit different than most introductory programming texts. This book covers the very basics of programming along with fairly advanced topics for a new coder. Many real word skills such as reading documentation and learning how to break down problems into solvable steps.

The first third is an introduction to programming, which covers topic like variables, basic text manipulation, and looping. A lot of guidance is given to the reader, while noting how to find more information online.

The middle third of LRtHW focuses on making the leap from examples to writing longer, more substantial programs with multiple files and branching. At this point, the author places a larger focus on using external sources of information. While still covering common problems that the reader might encounter, more references are made to looking up information in the Ruby documentation and looking at projects on GitHub.

The final third of the book covers many of the skills needed by a working programmer. The projects get larger in scope and more references are made to online resources. Some of the topics include how to structure programs and gems, automated testing, writing rudimentary 'game engines', and has a large focus on using Ruby on the web. Since most real world use of Ruby will be online, the emphasis on web programming is quite helpful.

Overall, I'm quite impressed with Learn Ruby the Hard Way. I would imagine this book will mostly be read by those with little or no programming experience. While I can't evaluate the book from that perspective, everything seems to be laid out very well for a new programmer. The logic and progression makes sense and is easy to follow. Showing readers how to find more information online is helpful and not something often encouraged by most authors. Perhaps my favourite part of LRtHW was the author telling readers to seek out material beyond one's comprehension and try to understand a little of it.

My only nitpick was that it seemed to have a little too much of a Python feel for a Ruby book. All the code examples I tried myself worked perfectly, but some of the text had odd word choices that seemed more appropriate for a book on Python. Not that this would have any effect on a new programmer, but it did seem a bit jarring.

I would definitely recommend Learn Ruby the Hard Way.

Excellent Foundation in Ruby

This book is great. I'm doing everything Zed suggests and it takes the time it takes. I've tried several other books and online resources, including videos at coding schools, and this one is the best I have found. It feels like a thorough foundation in the basics of Ruby, but since I'm a beginner, I can only speak at my level of expertise at the moment. Zed is a great teacher. Learning the basics of any complex pursuit can be inherently tedious, but Zed's humor and empathy help you stick with it. I highly recommend buying this book.

I am loving it!

I just received my copy of the Kingdom of God Version, The New Testament. What a joy it is to read! Easy flow, easy to understand. I find myself making mental pictures of what all is happening in the lives of Jesus and his disciples, much more than in any translation I've read previously. Mr. Faircloth uses modern wording to convey concepts that we've always heard, such as my favorite so far--rather than John the Baptist saying to "Repent!" he says "Change your mindset and life direction!" I chuckled when I first read that phrase, but how much more meaning it conveys in modern English than just the word "repent."
The Appendices are a treasure trove of explanations of misunderstood words and phrases and comparisons of other translations--the book is worth it just for these insights alone!
I thank Mr. Faircloth for the obviously many hours of work that it took to put this very scholarly and correct translation out there for us. I will be buying a few more copies to give as gifts!

Personal Interest Becomes Gift for my Father

I first purchased it to read how the translation handled certain misunderstood passages and was wonderfully surprised at the elegance of the wording, especially in the first chapter of John's gospel. I took the KGV with me to visit my parents and showed it to my father who knows Mr. Faircloth, dad was beside himself and being the pastor of my home church, I gave him the KGV and he plans on using it with his other sources. Excellent translation.
