Vilem Flusser was born in Prague in 1920. After emigrating to Brazil and then to France, he embarked on an influential career as a lecturer and writer on language, design, and communication. He died in 1991.

Man's fate in information society

This slender booklet is a collection of short, late essays by the cosmopolitan thinker Vilem Flusser. Originally from the Czech Republic he fled to Brazil at the beginning of the Second World War and returned to Europe only in the early 1970s. He died in a car crash in 1991. Writing in German, Portuguese, and French, Flusser remained unpublished in English during his lifetime. In fact, the book reviewed here was the very first to be made accessible to an English readership. Meanwhile, based on as yet a very small selection of translated work, he has acquired a kind of a cultstatus with cognoscenti as an iconoclastic, clairvoyant linguistic philosopher and media theorist. Flusser's big theme is the transition from a pre-industrial to an industrial and, onwards, to an information society. In that process, spanning a mere 300 years, our relationship with our environment, increasingly populated by `non-things', by artificial intelligences and robotic machines, has been (and continuous to be) fundamentally altered. What happens when human beings morph from being productive, shape-giving artisans to abstract calculators, pressing keys on a keyboard, when our existential concerns shift from things to information? An interesting, ambiguous reciprocal dependency sets in: "the robot only does what the human being wants, but the human being can only want what the robot can do." Hence, humans become `functionaries' of the programmed tools they have created, inscribing themselves into a kind of (hopefully) benign totalitarianism governed by potentially endless but pre-programmed choice. Flusser's perspicaciousness in anticipating an emerging, virtual, omnidirectionally transparant society is admirable. Although "The Shape of Things" is a slim booklet, it is very difficult to do justice to Flusser's ideas in the space of a short review. Flusser's way of communicating complex ideas is highly idiosyncratic. His idiom is more journalistic than scholarly: he uses clear and simple language in very short, punchy essays. There are no references to other thinkers or to secondary literature. His argument is characterized by unexpected twists, linking the mundane to the exotic, relying often on clever etymological and linguistic reasoning. The style is terse, at times to the point of abruptness. Flusser is a combative thinker, not afraid to take provocative positions to tease his readers. Sometimes there is a clenched teeth kind of wittiness. This book is not a full-fledged, methodically argued `philosophy of design' but a series of elliptical, thought-provoking essays intent on redefining the debate on what makes (and keeps) us human in a world engulfed by immaterial objects and smart robots.

About the Author
John A. Cameron is a retired police detective from Great Falls, Montana. His career in law enforcement began in 1979. He retired in 2005 as a sergeant of detectives, working cold cases. He has worked on FBI serial killer task forces, catching ritualistic child cannibal killer, Nathan Bar-Jonah. His cases have been featured on America's Most Wanted, Dateline NBC, and he co-produced the Most Evil-True TV series.

Interesting, but often Impossible to Believe

I really go back and forth on this book a lot. On one hand, it is not very well written at all (Cameron isn't really a writer, so he should probably be forgiven for that). On the other hand, I found it intensely interesting and couldn't really put it down. Some of the primary materials, including letters written by Edwards, are curiously odd and sometimes terrifying. There is a lot in this book that seems impossible to believe (such as the Ramsey and Hoffa claims), but there are also connections that you can't really deny (such as the fact that Edwards actually did know Jimmy Hoffa quite well).

Most people who will read this book will be those curious about the case that Edwards was the Zodiac. I don't know if he was or not, but Cameron shows several similarities Edward E shares with Zodiac that none of the other "suspects" do: 1) We know Edwards was a serial killer who often targeted couples, 2) We know that Edwards liked to write letters to newspapers and the police and that he bragged about his crimes through media outlets, and 3) We have documentation of Edwards claiming to know the identity of Zodiac.

Other stuff seems more dubious. It's hard to say for sure that Edwards was even in California at the time when Zodiac was active. Aside from that, Cameron connects him to *so many* high profile cases that you can get the sneaking suspicion that it's over sensationalized to hype the book. I don't really know what I think, but it's worth a read, in any case.

Hiding in plain view

January 1956 the police found the body of a missing girl on my dad's land but they never found the killer. If they had maybe the families of the victims of the Zodiac killer, Jon Benet's family, and many others would not be experiencing the never-ending pain the Kalitske and Bogle families have suffered. Had members of law enforcement looked right under their noses...but how many times did Edward Wayne Edwards escape detection? According to John A. Cameron, cold case detective and author, too many. In true crime fashion, It's Me attempts to decipher the convoluted path Edward Wayne Edward's life took. Could it be true that one man is responsible for so many untimely deaths including the Atlanta child murders in the 1980s? Though disputed by some, law enforcement hasn't solved these crimes. I couldn't put the book down until I finished reading 400 pages complete with newspaper articles, letters, and other documents that seem to substantiate John A. Cameron's claims. Will Edward Wayne Edwards be tried for these crimes? Unfortunately, not; he died of natural causes at age 77 in 2011.

This is nothing but hooey

I grew up in Great Falls so when I heard about this book I had to buy it. Setting aside that this is a poorly written (who writes and talks about themselves in the 3rd person?) and edited book that reads like “See Jane Run!” I gave it a try. I was only a few months old when Kalitzke and Bogle were murdered, but like everyone in GF I knew about them. Cameron outlined very convincingly that there is a strong case that Edwards likely murdered this young couple. He’s probably good for the three Oregon murders as well. His case for Edwards being the Zodiac Killer is compelling, though I’m not really sold yet. That said, when Cameron goes off on the tangent blaming Edwards for every sensational murder that happened in the 1940s and 1950s, well his credibility is totally gone. I cannot even begin to believe that a 13-14 year old boy dissected the Black Dahlia with such surgical precision that there were no scapel nicks on her bones and then drained her of blood. And the way he has him driving here and there committing one heinous murder after another but making it back to point A in no time at all. These murders took place before the interstate highway system people! And finally, JonBenet Ramsey - Puhleeze!! I’m surprised he didn’t blame him for the Lizzie Borden murders. Unless you like to read fantasy then skip this book.

Very Interesting!

This book is about Hannibal Barca, who is introduced as a nine year-old boy when his mother was captured and killed by Romans. He and six other companions (Punt, Baraq, Cornelius, Auf, Hasrubel, and Leviticus) travel to Nubia in order to fulfill a prophecy and take revenge. I liked how this book had several characters that each had their own personalities. My favorite character is Auf because he is like an older brother and he cares and protects his friends. The scene where Auf was separated from Rudy, his pet rhino, meant something to me because it shows how much he cares for him, and he is able to look past the physical appearance of the rhino and embrace the child-like animal. This book is based on actual history which sets it apart from other books I have read. If I were to recommend this book I would say that it is very interesting, and that the characters the author created that surround Hannibal brought the whole book to life. The question I have after reading this book is, how much of it is real?

Refreshing read! This author never disappoints. I laughed and I cheered the entire book while wanting to be each heroic character at one point after another. All this time I was taught Hannibal was this European master mind and come to find out, he was just like me.

Good Book and worth a read!!!

Hannibal is quite a refreshing read. With a biblical undertone and backdrop, the focus is on the progressive growth of Hannibal who starts off as a young man full of rage and a disregard for authority, to someone who is able to fully submit his will for the better way. The relationships of the characters takes them all from being self seeking in their paths, to a fully united force that truly realizes their areas of weakness, and they allow love and growth to move them from stubborn, stiff necked, and self seeking, to being more introspective and open to change. Great read, please order a copy and walk with Hannibal from the shores of a self seeking nation, to a country where he's able to discover his own self work, the value of partnership, and the unity that submitting can bring. Wonderful!!!!

wonderful study

A wonderful walk through the Bible. It helps to tie everything together. I went to Bible college, yet she makes this simple for everyone to grasp how things are related and shows that the Bible isn't just a bunch of individual stories.

The Bible in 6 weeks?

Our women's group chose this book in January 2016 for a study. I was skeptical about a survey of the entire Bible in just 6 weeks. My grouped loved this study and especially the videos. Angie Smith was able to weave the message of the Bible into short segments that resulted in clear understanding enhanced by her personal testimonies. This study has given a basis for a deeper desire to study God's Word.

I am and have been in a very in depth Bible study which I love so I definitely had my doubts

Angie Smith is very refreshing, down to earth not over the top dramatic, with a charming quiet personality. When I first looked over the study I felt it might be more for those just beginning to study the Bible. I am and have been in a very in depth Bible study which I love so I definitely had my doubts. I, along with the other 3 ladies find it refreshing and I have yet to NOT find something new I hadn't seen or thought about before. This should however, not amaze me, as my mother in law who passed away at age 90 years young, told me she never quit learning from God's Word. I would recommend the study for anyone who is looking for something that will get them in God's Word with minimal time spent but with a lot of meat to ponder.
