About the Author
Bruce Allen Murphy is the Fred Morgan Kirby Professor of Civil Rights at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he teaches American constitutional law and civil rights and liberties, American politics, and biographical writing. He is the author of Scalia"; "The Brandeis-Frankfurter Connection: The Secret Political Activities of Two Supreme Court Justices"; "Fortas: The Rise and Ruin of a Supreme Court Justice";" "and "Wild Bill: The Legend and Life of William O. Douglas". Murphy lives with his wife in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

okay.

The text reads alright. It has a fairly fluid style and works hard to include as many current reverences and illustrations to the material as possible. My only complaint is that in putting in so many recent examples of political concepts, there is no room left to give details on how the process actually works. For example, in the section on the appointment powers of the President, one of the three paragraphs was simply on the use of recess appointments by the Bush administration. What I wanted to know about was what positions are appointed, what type of majority vote (simple, 2/3) was needed for approval, if any, and what powers do the other branches of government have to check these powers. I appreciate the contemporary color recent and relevant examples give, but I think they take up too much space and give the reader the impression that a (very expensive)book that went to press three years ago is already out of date, when in actuality there is more than 250 years worth of material to pull from.

Overly simplistic textbook for college

I have to concur with Rebecca's review although in addition to placing too much emphasis on vague examples, the writing style is overly simplistic for a college textbook. The author's attempt to do as such reduces concision, considering that this is also the effect of giving too much space to poor examples of political concepts in sacrifice of clear explanation of those concepts.

About the Author
As young adult, Trollope endured seven years of poverty in the General Post Office in London before accepting a better-paying position as postal surveyor in Banagher, Ireland in 1841. The years in Ireland formed the basis of his second career delineating clerical life in small cathedral towns.

Trollope and Social Politics

Trollope's first novel in his Barsetshire series was The Warden. It was based on the corruption at St. Cross Hospital during the early nineteenth century by its Master, Francis North, in Winchester, England.

At the time of the Second Reform Act of 1867, Trollope had written the first of his Paliser series, which was a political novel. At this time, he also wrote Nina Balatka, a novel which reflects the beginning of the end of social restrictions inflicted on Jews in Prague. It concerns the love between a Catholic woman, Nina, and a Jewish man, Anton Trendellsohn who was a merchant.

It is the story of the couple's triumph over family manipulation and lies to find a life for themselves. With so many stereotypical Jewish characters in Trollope's prolific literature, Nina Balatka serves as an effective way to demonstrate that his antisemitism is satirical and stops with his characters while his sympathy for the Jew is without reservation.

Trollope was able to proceed with his political life by running for parliament representing the borough of Beverley. He was unsuccessful but was able to continue his series of Paliser novels. Part of his goal was to chronicle anti-semitism in Victorian England which he did successfully. Due to his evenhandedness in writing Nina Balatka, the prejudice was never one of which he could be accused.

George Eliot followed his lead by writing Daniel Deronda,a story about a Jew who is also betrayed by his family but eventually finds love among one of his own. Although she is generally considered of higher intellect than Trollope, she was not able to rid her novel of her personal conviction that married women are dull, dependent creatures who are unable to think for themselves. In this respect, Nina Balatka is refreshing as a fearless heroine, willing to face the duplicity of her family in the name of love.

Love against all odds in Prague.

Anthony Trollope typically writes long novels with several story lines that come together as the novel progresses. Not so with Nina Balatka. Set in Prague in the middle of the nineteenth century when anti-Semitism made life difficult for the Jews, the story begins with the announcement that a lovely yet desperately poor Christian girl named Nina Balatka is engaged to marry a rich Jewish man named Anton Trendellsohn. Everyone in the Christian and Jewish community is against the marriage and Nina's aunt and cousin do all they can to prevent the wedding from taking place.

Nina, a strong willed and completely reliable young woman, is well prepared to defend herself against all of Prague, if necessary. Her chief problem is not the Christians and Jews in Prague, but her betrothed, Anton Trendellsohn. His father owns the house Nina and her father live in, but the Trendellsohns do not have the deed for the property. Anton desperately wants to acquire this document. Nina tells Anton in no uncertain terms that she and her father don't have the deed, but he does not believe her.

The entire novel centers on this lack of trust and its consequences for Nina and Anton. We, the readers, know that Nina is telling the truth. We experience her frustration as again and again she tries to convince Anton that the deed is in the possession of her aunt, uncle, and cousin, who will do anything to prevent her marriage to Anton.

No spoilers here. The reader of this review who wants to find out just what happens to the deed, the great mystery of the story, will have to read the novel to find out. Also, we don't learn until the end of the book if the course of Nina's true love for Anton is rewarded or if Nina throws herself off a bridge in Prague into the Moldau river to drown herself, as she is tempted to do when it appears that she will not marry Anton.

The problem with this novel is that Nina is too good and Anton is clearly unworthy of her great love. All her reason tells her to break off the marriage and we, the readers, are convinced by her logic, even if she is not. When I finally came to the end of this short novel, and none too soon, I was not fully satisfied with the outcome. Even so, this is the work of Anthony Trollope, one of my favorite English authors. Even mediocre Trollope is far superior to anything the reader is likely to find in any modern novel. Nina Balatka is not a place to begin an acquaintance with the novels of Anthony Trollope, but those who love Trollope's work, as I do, are almost certain to find some merit in this novel.

Produced with meticulous care and taste, this album of motifs displays each design at its best: details are sharp and clear against monochromatic backgrounds; subtle hues with stylized renderings of birds, fish, animals, flowers, clouds, waves, and other shapes achieve a highly controlled composition of unity and grace. Designs are also ingeniously adapted to their specific use on the garment: as circular "crests" for broad flat areas, and as elongated panels for borders, collars, and trouser legs. Captions identify each motif and briefly indicate the type of costume, and the parts of the costume on which they occur.

Sweet and endearing

Also, very funny in parts. There were times when when I found myself cracking up at this book. And although romances where people are saying "I love you" after the third date usually make me roll my eyes or cringe, Danny and Davey usually had enough cute teasing in their dialogue for me to find them endearing as a couple, as opposed to unrealistic and/or creepy. Also, it was well edited, especially for an ebook. I'll admit to having some preconcieved notion that the cheaper the book is listed usually means the crappier the book is. I still try to give them a chance and every now and then, I'm pleasantly and greatly surprised. That was definitely the case with this book. $2.99 is definitely a good deal and I totally recommend this book.

Man Enough, and then some!

This book captured my attention and would not let it go. I was completely tickled by the interplay between the characters, gay, straight, and questioning. I could totally see myself having these conversations and reactions to the drama. I was actually shocked that Davey, considering both her career and her circle of friends, would reject Danny at all. But it made her human, not just another liberal GLBT ally. I loved the book so much, I turned right around and read it a second time, turned my mother on to it, posted my 5 stars to Facebook, and will sing it's praises from the highest rooftops. Thank you, Ms. Burnett, for the tears and the laughter!!!

Entertaining and thought-provoking

This was a great read! I was quickly sucked into the lives of the ladies in the book, as I almost instantly identified bits and pieces of my own personality in each of the characters. The love of the characters and the hints the author gives about what is to come made it hard to put down each night. I would tell myself "just one more chapter" over and over again! Throughout the book I was rooting for each of the characters to find love, especially Davey and Andy who were my favorites! In the end I was left to analyze my own strength in character and hope that in the same situation I would have the strength to make the right decision. I hope the author continues to follow the lives of the ladies in this book! Man Enough

Laura Jane Grace is a transgender musician best known as the founder, lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of the punk rock band Against Me!.
