About the Author
Talal Itani is an electronics engineer, software developer, and writer. He was born in 1961, in Beirut Lebanon. He immigrated to the United States when he was 18, seeking education and peace. In 1983, he graduated with a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering. After a few years of employment, he founded a research and development company, which quickly became successful and renowned in the field of telecommunications.

Talal first encountered the Holy Quran in 1992. He studied and researched the Quran for 15 years, then decided to translate it himself, into clear and easy-to-read modern English. The translation, which he published in 2012, is praised as pure, clear, and very faithful to the Arabic Original. Talal currently develops software and maintains the Quran translation. He lives in the United States, is married, and has two adult daughters.

Very practical fluids engineering guide

Book was well worth the money. Compariable in price to any academic text. I bought it new, which is a reprint of the classic Blevins text. It doesn't come with any dust cover. I was looking for pipe & fitting loss calculations, which it goes over extensively. Serves as a good guide for actual engineering, since it contains a good balance of theory, design guidelines, and applied data from experimentation on most fluid mechanics type problems.

An Indispensible Handbook for Fluids Engineers

This book is an excellent and exhaustive treatment of the engineering aspects of fluid flow in pipes, through components, and in open channel situations, not to mention nearly every other situation that a mechanical engineer might encounter. As an engineer with fluids and thermal system design experience, I highly recommend this work to anyone in this field. Especially useful are the exhaustive tables of K - values for nearly every imaginable component, including partially open valves, screens, and almost every imaginable type of pipe. This book is well worth the price.

This is the book I've been wanting. I have a number of books on preserving foods, including the "Bible" of preserving, "The Art of Fermentation." This book is so full of useful information, including how to prevent things going wrong, how much of what you need (as opposed to Sandor Katz's saying, "these days I just throw it in." (NOT useful.) In any case, Shockey's book is a pleasure to read, easy to use, has wonderful photos and illustrations, and ideas for preserving that are new to me. On top of all that, it is fun to read. What more do you want? Buy this book.

A-Z compendium of veggie fermentations

Great resource - am an 'experienced' fermenter but this book would work for beginners as well. it is a nice A-Z compendium of how to ferment (and when not to ferment) your fave veggies. I use a slightly different method to prevent mold, and i use a water lock but the recipes are well thought-out and solid. especially helpful is the 'scum' identifier section at the back of the book. and yes, there are pictures sprinkled throughout- a must for me, a visual cook.

An Inspirational Kick Start!

I'm not exactly new to fermenting, but I was stuck - doing the same, comfortable fermentations - until I got this book. It is so easy to understand, so simple to find a recipe for whatever veggie you are currently harvesting, and so inspirational in the combinations of spices and veggies that I found myself immediately looking for more crocks! I got started right away with the Thai-inspired Baby Pak Choi recipe and after finding some giant beets hiding under the cucumber leaves, the Curried Golden Beets. All so yummy!

I can see spending the entire next harvest season experimenting my way through the recipes, and then enjoying one of the cocktails at the end of the day. A great book and refreshing addition to my fermentation library!

Thorough and suitable for the experienced professional

This book is an excellent follow-on book to Computer Forensics: Incident Response Essentials by Kruse and Heiser, which introduces the fundamentals. This book goes much deeper and is more technical than the Kruse and Heise, therefore the ideal audience is practicing professionals who have prior experience in forensics and a wide range of hardware, software and network knowledge.
Tools and techniques are presented in painstaking detail. I was unable to find a single gap or omission, which speaks highly of the editorial and review process behind this book's 464 pages. While most technical disciplines can dispense with finer details, the nature of forensics is to overlook nothing. If you find the step-by-step thoroughness boring that is an indication that forensics may not be your forte; if you're an experienced professional you'll appreciate the coverage of every technique or use of tools.

While the discussion of tools and techniques will satisfy even the most experienced practitioner, I found the detailed discussion of legal aspects, HR considerations and overall security and incident response processes to be the book's strongest points. This area is what sets forensics experts apart from technicians, and it is here that the book (in my opinion) adds the most value. Procedures ranging from how to properly gather, preserve and control evidence, to legal considerations for designing processes are covered in clear language, as are US and international legal guidelines.
Parts that I especially like include: intrusion management and profiling, up-to-date information on electronic commerce legal issues, the numerous checklists and cited resources, and the clearly delineated process for dealing with incidents.
If you're new to forensics you will probably get more from this book by first reading Computer Forensics: Incident Response Essentials by Kruse and Heiser. If, however, you have previous computer forensics experience or are currently serving in that role this book is probably one of the best investments you can make.

THIS IS THE 1ST EDITION PUBLISHED IN 2002!!!!!! THERE IS A NEW VERSION (PUBLISHED DECEMBER 2007) AVAILABLE!!!

I have notified Amazon of this and I am sure they will address it as soon as they can. However, I didn't want someone else to buy it and receive a different edition than what they expected. If you do want the 1st edition then go ahead and order away. But, if you want the 2nd edition, Amazon does sell it also.

Historically Superb

I was looking for a book that would teach me how to do things. I can find lots of information on the internet, but I wanted techniques collaborated in one book by a professional. What I found was a lot of legal background, and historical background. I am not starting a computer forensics firm, but I do want to be able to track down, if some sort of mishap occurs. This book provides low level information, like dissecting Netscape, and going through and showing you how to track someone's steps through Netscape Navigator. I wanted some more practical knowledge that I could use to fight spammers, or to show me how to deal with intrusions on my system. I was disappointed with this book, but I hope that you won't be.

About the Author
Sergios Theodoridis is Professor of Signal Processing and Machine Learning in the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Athens.
He is the co-author of the bestselling book, Pattern Recognition, and the co-author of Introduction to Pattern Recognition: A MATLAB Approach.
He serves as Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, and he is the co-Editor in Chief with Rama Chellapa for the Academic
Press Library in Signal Processing.

A much needed and long awaited handbook on modern (Statistical) Machine Learning, including the most current trends of Bayesian Non-parametrics and Deep Learning. Very well-written, it helps the students grasp the main concepts as well as the technical details of the method. The companion MATLAB source codes are also very useful for better understanding of the methods. Being an instructor myself, I would rate it as exceptional.

Good but may be hard to follow

I'm still looking for a "perfect machine learning theory book": the one which is a pleasure to read and that covers most of concepts you see here and there all the time but always wanted to know how exactly they work: log-linear, maximum likelihood, MAP, least squares and MLS, expectation maximization, stochastic gradient descent, CRFs, mixtures of gaussian, and many others. I would like that the book explain to me why should I use this model or algorithm, why previous one would not be good? And I would like that the author take the time to carefully guide the reader throughout the theory, without leaving him alone with a bunch of matrix equations or integrals like if they were evident.

I'm not a novice in the AI: I have a PhD (not in the theoretical Machine Learning though) and several years of practical experience with the algorithms. But most of the time I use the algorithms and models like blackboxes. My goal, however, is not only be able to use the algorithms and know where and how each algorithm can be used, but really understand the math that drives each them.

Unfortunately, this is not the book that can help me with my goal. In the beginning of each chapter the author really tries to move slowly with a care to details, but very fast the math becomes the only language used on the page. If, in the middle of a section you didn't understand how equation 12 follows from equation 11, your only option is to skip the remainder of the section and this is very frustrating.

As an example, when presenting the "central limit theorem", the author writes "Consider N mutually independent random variables, each following its own distribution with mean values ... and variances ... Define a new random variable **as their sum**: ... Then the mean and variance of the new variable are given by...". Here, or before, no definition of a **sum of two random variables** was presented. But this is very important to understand, because later, for example, in the "Linear Regression" section of Chapter 3, the author writes "If we model the system as a linear combiner, the dependence relationship is written as: " (a linear combination of several random variables follows). What does this mean: a linear combination of ***random variables***? How is this related to the central limit theorem which says that by adding up several random variables, the resulting variable tends to have a gaussian distribution? Author, please don't hurry up, it's a book, not a NIPS paper!

Furthermore, the whole section "3.10.1 LINEAR REGRESSION: THE NONWHITE GAUSSIAN NOISE CASE" on page 84 cannot be directly understood from the text because the author does not explain how the joint log-likelihood function L(theta) for the model of y dependent on theta, x and nu can be constructed. The equation 3.57 gives the final expression for L(theta) but no clues on how to build it if we only have a linear model for y. I spent the whole evening just to understand that to build the joint log-likelihood function one has to transform the y = theta*x + nu into the expression p(y=yn | x=xn, theta, nu) and in order to obtain one such expression for each yn, one has to write p(y=yn | x=xn, theta, nu) = sum_k p(xn*theta=k)p(nu=yn - xn*theta). Then, the joint log likelihood L(theta) can be obtained as ln p(y=y1 | x=x1, theta, nu) + ln p(y=y2 | x=x2, theta, nu) + ... + ln p(y=yn | x=xn, theta, nu).

The internet is full of information on the subject of machine learning. Almost every subject is already explained by multiple sources. The problem with the information of the Web is that it is dispersed and often incomplete. If one decides to write a book on this subject, it has to be complete and self-contained. With this book, unfortunately, one still has to google, decrypt and guess things just too often to call the reading process a pleasure.

It is a great book!!! It covers a wide range of subjects related to machine leaning not found in other books. It is well written and includes detailed reference list in each subject matter. The book should be useful for practitioners, graduate students and academics. I am glad I bought it.
